Brief History
Established in 2002, the goal of Environmental Conservation Center is to strengthen the planning and development of environmental protection and to implement campus environmental management based on national policy. Meanwhile, NTNU abolished the previous center, “Environmental Education Center” which was replaced by “Environmental Conservative Center” (ECC).
In 1989, in order to reinforce environmental education research and development, NTNU established the first Environmental Education Center in Taiwan approved by Ministry of Education. In 2002, the title of the center changed as “Environmental Conservative Center”. The first director of ECC was Dr. Guan-Zheng Yang through 1989 to 1994, Yang was also the professor and ex-Chief of general affair in NTNU. Through 1995 to 2003, Dr. Jing-Ming Wang, professor of Environment Education Department, continued the duty of being a director. From 2004 to present, Dr. Shi-Guang Hou, professor of Industrial Technology Education Department, was the third director of ECC. The director of ECC is in charge of supervising all the center’s affairs and assists the operation of Environmental Healthy Organization of NTNU.
The foundation of Environmental Education Center has leaded the domestic universities to strengthen their environmental education, research, service and extension; it assisted the establishment of Environmental Education Department of NTNU as well. For the time being, Environmental Education Center has successfully transferred into synthesized Environmental Conservation Center, and fulfills the goal of campus environmental management and research development step by step based on organizational structure, executive law and integration of human resource.
Tasks and Achievements
The center consists of three divisions: (a) General Planning, (b) Environmental Management, and (c) Researching & Promoting. Eeach division is composed of one head and several professional staff.
The main tasks of the center are:
1. To plan and promote campus environmental pollution prevention.
2. To plan and promote safety and health in campus lab, practice factories and work places.
3. To plan and promote campus environment protection.
4. To implement and promote study and service related to environmental protection.
5. To plan and promote miscellaneous environmental protection affairs.
The achievements of the center are as follows:
1. Established and renewed the web-site information.
2. Established the connection among the related school environmental safety and health units.
3. Renewed the property inventory of the center.
4. Cooperating and promoting with other centers and units of the university on environmental
managements, educational and research projects.
5. Cooperating and exchanging experiences with units outside the campus.
6. Contacting and cooperating projects with related centers and units.
Future Prospects
The future tasks of the center are as follows:
1. To upgrade the center's processing system with digital techniques, such as circulating
information via e-mail or web sites and managing database with computers, etc.
2. To promote automated safety checking system of the university's lab environments by creating
a standard certificating system.
3. To reinforce the study and promotion of environmental conservation and education.
4. To strengthen cooperation and promoting projects of environmental protection and education
with the industries, government units, academics units and etc.
Based on the achievements of the Environmental Education Center, the renamed and function-transformed center will continually reinforce environmental safety and health management. We aim to be better digitalized in various aspects and to strengthen better cooperation and promotion with the industries, government and other related organizations.
